Hello to all,
For all those considering running this on your primary computer I sincerely reccommend that you investigate other software, such as Norton, PC Tools, or many other well known solutions. Software from an unknown, or minor third party company can lack the protection that other wide-scale used software offer. This may leave your computer unprotected and vunerable to attacks.
As an IT professional I would strongly reccomend against using this software, especially on your primary computer.
NEVER HEARD OF IT!!! SO DO NOT USE IT!!???!!!???
I remember a time that no one had ever heard of McAfee which was used to fight SNEAKER NET viruses, Norton? Isn't that a WWII bomb sight? -- And NOW they SHOULD be household names in computers.
Why would a PROFESSIONAL recommend inferior products such as Norton or PC Tools when they rank well below GRISOFT in testing.
WHAT!?!?! Never HEARD of GRISOFT, which is FREE FOR PERSONAL use and ranks near the top of all the unbiased testing. And Grisoft is not even the best of the freebees out there! Interesting that the freebees actually out score most of the NON-free AV software out there!
Yes, people should do their homework but if someone does NOT have AV protection and want to load this, well at least they have some protection! Yes, it would be nice to see more independent testing done.
One of the more interesting "NAME" recognition aspects is that with a lot of money and a good PR department, any INFERIOR product can beat out a superior product. Do not have any money to let the world know about your superior product? Sorry, but you, and the consumer looses!
The reason it is offered here is to get exposure.
To say "YOU" never heard of it so WE should not use it is not very constructive! Before advising against something, it would help to give facts as to WHY we should avoid it and not just FUD! (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt)
Personal Safe'n'Sec 1.1
REVIEW DATE:11.02.05
# Product: Personal Safe'n'Sec 1.1
# Price: $25 direct ($35 with BitDefender scanner).
# Company: StarForce, www.star-force.com
Ratings 2 STAR
StarForce's Personal Safe'n'Sec monitors the behavior of running programs rather than analyzing their code, although a more expensive edition of the program includes the BitDefender antivirus scanner as an option. StarForce makes sweeping claims for the program's behavior blocking: "It is able to effectively block all malicious processes caused by any kind of threat." These claims are excessive.
With most conventional worms, not long after we executed the attack program, the Intelligent Activity Control dialog box popped up to report that the program had attempted to set itself to run at Microsoft Windows start-up by creating an entry in the HKey_Local_Machine Run key. At this point, we could either allow or block the action, but with some options: We could block just the action flagged by the program or block any activity by the program; we could block the application from the activity this time, all times in the current session, or all times in the future. These options are difficult to understand as explained in Safe'n'Sec, but at least the defaults are acceptable, as long as the user presses the "Block" button. It could be clearer, but it's not as obscure as in Prevx Pro.
In performance testing, Safe'n'Sec blocked 24 of 30 malware samples. But in some cases, it wasn't clear whether it actually did anything. After we ran one program (which BitDefender identified as Win32.Bagle.CX@mm), the Windows Firewall beat Safe'n'Sec to the punch, popping up before Safe'n'Sec had made any complaints to say that it had blocked unspecified actions of the program and asking whether it should continue.
Also, after running Safe'n'Sec we started getting inexplicable errors, with warnings about innocent programs, such as Explorer.exe, attempting to do things they had every right to do.
Safe'n'Sec has a few user-controllable settings, two of note. You can edit the list of controlled applications, meaning applications that are either trusted, restricted, or partially trusted or restricted. There is also one big slider bar called "Control policy" with three settings: Trusting, Strict, and Total. Trusting restricts Safe'n'Sec to examining only certain activities in the system, such as Registry writes and modification of system files. Total puts all activities under the scrutiny of Safe'n'Sec. Strict, the default policy, is a balance between the two.
We think both Prevx and TruPrevent will provide better protection than Safe'n'Sec. Safe'n'Sec is easier to use than Prevx, so it might appeal to nontechnical users looking for behavior blocking, but such users would be better served by TruPrevent.
Did a little bit of research on line for makers of this software. Found out that the Russian-based company was established in 2006 and the software it makes are actively marketed in Europe. Considering the number of downloads on CNET, it appears the company only recently got into the market.
I am downloading it now in the hopes it is a comparable alternative to the more popular AV, etc., made by more famous software makers as pointed out in the first comment. I recall having downloaded from GAOTD a made in India anti-spyware that detected better than the more established products in its category. Of course, I also recognize this specific SW has a lot of false positives.
Considering Safe & Sec is free, I suppose it is worth giving a try. Yes, this I think is the second time it has been offered here. If you will notice, AVG, which I have installed on my PCs at home, is made in Europe. I hope I could post again once I have tried Safe & Sec.
Safe -n- Sec Personal that was offered recently. Froze my pc thought maybe it was a bug I gave it Thumbs Down. Since this was a new offer thought I'd give it another try. Same problem froxe my pc could not access any programs even in safe mode. Rascal put up a pretty good fight to stay installed and to keep from shutting down services. I have once again to give this program Thumbs Down. My only hope is no one else has the problems I encountered.
Al
I instaled yesterday the safe'n sec and it blocked all my pcs in fact I could only use them in safe mode therefor I had no option but to uninstall it. :(
I have never had any problem with all the previous programs that I have installed so far.
