According to Protected Folder's documentation, the options to hide, deny read access, and deny write access are independently selectable, but apply to all protected files/folders. That makes it a little more versatile than my security software, which simply denies access to protected files/folders. Usually, this type of software can be readily circumvented by booting in Safe mode or from a boot disk, and in any case, the unencrypted files could be read outside of Windows. So this raises the question of what this gains you over the built-in Windows security features. If you want security, optionally with hiding, then you should use encryption, such as AxCrypt, TrueCrypt, or FreeOTFE.

I am going to pass o this one. There are many free and proven apps to protect a file. I don't feel comfortable locking up a folder with a paid software if I don't own it.What happens if I run into a registration problem after I lock my folder

The GotD restriction of only installing on a certain day is one that I can often accept to get a free piece of software. But I've lost many GotD programs when Windows crashed and needed to be reinstalled (as it is prone to do). I certainly don't want to protect my most important files with this and take a chance that there my be no good way to get them back if Windows strikes again. Thanks but no thanks. Perhaps GotD could consider offering some alternative for programs that, if lost, put other files at risk, such as this software or backup or encryption software. A portable install or a package that can be installed after the 24 hour period might be considered justifiable in such a case.

The "Expiration Date: 2012-05-10" part of this application makes me quite worried!

So what will happen to the protected data (and to the program) after the expiry date?

A brief comment from the developer with ref. to this very important subject would be highly appreciated.
