I must say, I've only been using this for an hour or so, and I really like it! I've tried other docks before, but none of them had anywhere NEAR the functionality that Nexus Ultimate does. In just that short time, I've set up my "new" (Vista Basic) desktop to exactly the way I always wanted it to work - by simply customizing the Dock and the Shelf - and I've only begun to explore the possibilities. I suggest anyone interested in this read the FAQ page at the Winstep site - it's a treasure trove of suggestions and solid info on all the features that this nifty program has - but I already know that even the FAQ doesn't contain half of the things you can do with it!
I've been computing since the pre-Vic20 days, and never had so much control over an environment - I don't really think there's anything that can't be done in terms of customizing it, within reason. I finally ended up with a nearly invisible dock, a single small floating icon for the shelf - and yet within those two I have quick access to nearly everything I do on a regular basis, be it programs, websites, documents, and even current projects - the speed with which you can add and subtract items is key to making it more useful than a "standard" dock, as well as the myriad ways you can link items together in groups, and any number of other ways you're used to thinking of your projects and activities.
Of course, it's not all great - after all, you're still slowed by having to plow thru "pages" to get to that specific icon if you're used to having dozens of icons on your desktop like I am, and nothing is faster than flicking a mouse across the desktop to hit a specific icon if you know where it is. But the advantage of being able to clear all those icons into logical groups makes that few seconds worthwhile IMO, because I'm also used to cleaning up my desktop icon clutter on a regular basis, and I can easily add new icons into my existing groups - which solves one of the basic problems I've always had, simply having so many icons on my desktop I can't keep track of what goes where.
This one's a keeper and surely destined to become a daily user for me, just based on my short experience so far; I think it has all the horsepower and options a user like me needs to keep things flowing when I've got 7 or 8 projects going at the same time - and that's on TOP of the normal system choices folded into Ultimate. For me the flexibility and ease of use are worth the slight sacrifices I'll make in terms of speed over my old habits.
Pros: near-infinite flexibility of configuration, nearly unlimited capabilities in terms of types and layouts, combined with the ease of usage and ability to make it nearly invisible when not in use, as well as a low memory footprint and cpu-usage for less-complicated setups make this a keeper for me.
Cons: cpu-hog and memory footprint seem to be (remember, I've only been using it a couple hours now!) related to complexity of configuration, perhaps requiring sacrificing eye candy and effects (which I've never had much use for) in order to balance system loads when heavily multi-tasking, or especially gaming. OTOH, it's so easy to turn on and off that might not be a problem - time will tell.
Thanks, Winstep and GOTD - this one's a rare winner in my book!
Frank, just install Nexus Ultimate on TOP of the freeware version of Nexus.
Graham, that and much more!
Tom, it will be hard for Blastsound to answer that seeing that he has only been using Nexus Ultimate for 2 hours. Nexus Ultimate has a TON of features in terms of functionality that no other dock has, but it will probably take some time for him to start realizing this.
Just a couple: the Shelf (tabbed dock) in Nexus Ultimate allows you to have tabs showing the contents of folders in your hard drive, supporting drag & drop, and it also allows you to display the contents of virtual folders such as the Desktop, Control Panel, etc...
Nexus Ultimate features an unlimited level of nested sub-docks. Sub-docks can even be added to tabs in the Shelf, if that's your thing, and moved between docks via drag & drop. :-P
Nexus Ultimate also features over 80 internal commands (special shortcuts you add to your docks or the Shelf) which can be used for stuff such as controling WinAmp/Windows Media Player, forcing your monitor into standby, hibernate your PC, show the Windows Start Menu, take a screenshot of your desktop, and so on...
On the eye candy front, Nexus has live icon reflections, automatic background blur, cool fluid effects such as animated icon reflections and water ripple, and a ton of other mouse over effects.
Just take your time to explorer Nexus Ultimate, you'll like it! :-)
BlastSound and others, regarding the right-click context menu support:
Open Preferences -> Advanced tab -> Misc.Advanced button -> Enable the setting 'Show full right click context menus'.
The funny thing is that when we had that option on by default in previous versions, users complained about the lenght of the context menus. Can't win! ;-)
Sorenson, Nexus Ultimate has many other mouse over effects besides the Mac-like magnify effect that makes you so sea sick! ;-)
Right click the Nexus control icon -> Effects (or open the dock's Properties dialog and select a different mouse over effect in the Effects tab).
Available Effects are:
1. None.
2. Magnify (the one you like so much ;-).
3. Flat Magnify.
4. Zoom.
5. Bounce.
6. AfterGlow.
7. Rock.
8. Swing.
You can choose other effects for the Shelf too.
