Because of the data density of modern hard drives it is apparently much easier to erase the residue of old files.
It is worth checking the effectiveness of any erase program with a decent recovery program just be on the safe side.

Personally in the past the only program I have used to do this is the following:-

No offense meant for you, but I have a feeling that most of your comments here are meant to tarnish my reputation or at least warn people that my free alternatives are just crap (it happened with other GAOTD in the past as well)....and I wonder why (I'm not earning any money for that...so relax...LOL!!)!

Of course, criticisms to my comments are allowed and very much welcome, as long as they are sensible and constructive: for instance, whenever you snub a FREE GEM of mine, why not add a better one saying why your freebie is better than mine? So far you never did that!

In this case those article you mentioned in your comment are mainly addressed to very advanced professional PC users and for Corporate Environment as well...

99% of us here are just AVERAGE HOME USERS...come on...

So the GUTMAN method is more than enough for us!

But to settle things once and for all, just use my third recommendation (Portable Blank And Secure), which does not use Gutmann standard (and the developer explains why he didn't implement it in his short blurb).
